Common questions
The security screening itself will not stop you from carrying an FAA-approved POC through the checkpoint — screeners will treat it as a medical device. The problem comes at boarding: without advance notification to your airline, the crew may refuse to let you use it in the cabin. Contact your airline at least 48 hours before your flight to arrange approval and confirm the device is on the FAA's accepted list.
Compressed oxygen cylinders are prohibited in both carry-on and checked baggage on commercial aircraft in every major aviation system — the US, UK, EU, Canada, and Australia all apply the same prohibition. A portable oxygen concentrator that generates oxygen from ambient air is a completely different device and is the only acceptable option for passengers who need supplemental oxygen in flight.
Airlines enforce this through their check-in and gate processes rather than at security — you'll be asked to show documentation that your specific device is FAA-approved and that you have medical clearance to use it. Have your airline's approval confirmation and your doctor's letter ready at check-in and again at the gate. Gate agents are not permitted to guess whether your device is approved, so documentation is essential.
Contact your airline as soon as your ticket is booked — most require notification 48 to 72 hours in advance, and some require up to a week for medical clearance processing. Bring enough fully charged batteries to last 150% of your total flight time, as airlines typically require this buffer. Spare lithium batteries must travel in the cabin, not in checked baggage.
