Common questions

Security will not stop you for an inflated football — the ball itself is permitted in carry-on if deflated and within size limits. An inflated ball is unlikely to fit in an overhead bin and may not meet carry-on dimension rules, so the more likely outcome is that a gate agent will ask you to check it at the gate. Deflate it before you arrive to avoid this.

The main concern for checked baggage is that a pressurised ball in the cargo hold can burst as cabin pressure and temperature change. Because of this, airlines in multiple regions — including those following EU and Australian aviation guidance — recommend or require that sports balls be deflated before checking. A deflated ball packed in a bag has no restrictions anywhere.

A deflated flat football in a bag is unlikely to attract any attention at the gate. An inflated ball, on the other hand, is visibly oversized and a gate agent will almost certainly tell you it will not fit in the overhead bin. If your carry-on is otherwise within the size limit, you may be offered gate-check at no charge, but some airlines apply a fee.

Deflate the ball completely at home using a needle pump and pack it flat inside your checked bag or carry-on. A fully deflated size 5 ball takes up far less space than you expect and folds into a standard suitcase easily. Bring your pump needle in your carry-on (it is permitted) so you can inflate the ball at your destination.
