Common questions
Any remaining water in the kettle counts as a liquid and will need to be removed before the kettle can pass through — screeners will ask you to empty it. The kettle itself is permitted in carry-on, but it must be empty and dry. Pouring out the water into a nearby drain and patting the interior dry with a paper towel is usually enough to satisfy the screener.
Electric kettles are permitted in both carry-on and checked baggage worldwide, with no notable regional restrictions. The only universal requirements are that the kettle is empty, dry, and cool when packed — none of which vary by region or aviation authority.
Compact travel kettles occasionally draw attention on X-ray because their internal heating element can look unusual alongside the water reservoir. If your bag is pulled, the screener will simply open it to confirm the kettle is empty and unplugged. Placing the kettle near the top of your carry-on makes this inspection quick and easy.
Empty and rinse the kettle, then leave the lid open to allow any moisture inside to evaporate — ideally overnight or for a few hours before departure. Make sure it has cooled completely, as a warm kettle can cause issues at the checkpoint and may be uncomfortable against other items in your bag. Wrapping the cord neatly around the kettle body and securing it with a velcro strap prevents the cord from tangling with other belongings.
